Alexander, Too Great for his own People? {Michelle}

How great was Alexander the Great? He wouldn’t have such a cool name like this if he wasn’t great! I mean, he wasn’t called Alexander the Dummy or something, so he must have been a pretty decent guy. Personally, I think he’s a pretty awesome dude. Someone with leadership, courage, and kindness is what I’m talking about.

 Not only did he conquer 2,000,000 miles of land, (my fingers almost died typing that many zeroes), he was also nice and friendly to many of his subjects and people, and he was also stupidly brave. (Cough, cough, taking over the whole Persian Empire.)

If you disagree, you might want to reconsider. Think about this. How easy is it to conquer 2 million miles of land1!? I mean, that has to take some serious guts. The land Alexander conquered, in his lifetime, was nearly the size of the Roman Empire at its greatest size1! Only 200,000 square miles less1! And that’s totally (insert as much sarcasm as possible) not great! And he was only 20 when he started2! Geez, doesn’t Alexander sound a bit over-ambitious?! I wouldn’t want to become his enemy back then!

So, what really makes him great? Well, Alexander was kind to many of his men and even his enemies! He spared many of his enemies’ lives and gave rewards to his men who did good things3. Even though he’s a tidbit crazy with all the land, he was often kind to both his enemies and his people.

For example, in the Legend of the Helmet, Alexander and his troops were marching in the sun and after a while, they got super thirsty. After a super long while, Alexander’s army found finally found a trickle of water, and they put it in a helmet and gave it to Alexander. Then, Alexander took the water, in full view of his troops, and poured it on the ground. When he did that, he showed that he was going to be equal to his troops and that he was going to keep on truckin’ like his troops. And after he did that, his actions were as good as a drink for every man in the army! Alexander must have been trying to impress someone or something like that, because after walking across a desert in the burning sun, who wouldn’t want a drink of water? Apparently Alexander doesn’t!

Lastly, he was insanely brave. Seriously, who has the guts to face the most powerful empire in the world and conquer them all?! I know for a fact that I don’t. Literally, Alexander and his army were pretty puny (Just look at the map below!) compared to the Persian Empire, yet they just marched up and defeated them, and even conquered more than the old Persian Empire! Take that, Persia!

Now, when you think of Alexander the Great, think about all the good he’s done that I have just summed up in this blog. Hopefully you’ll remember this, and if someone tells you about the bad things about him, how he was so arrogant and greedy and blah blah blah, they’re probably just jealous that they aren’t as awesome as him. I wouldn’t be surprised.
