The King Alexander, leading his military and unifying the world.
Alexander got his empire almost as big as the Roman Empire. So, was he really great? Of course he was! He was great because he was able to lead his army well. He also got success at the young age of just 20. He respected all cultures when he took control of them.
Alexander was great because he was able to lead his army through tough times. According to “The Legend of the Helmet” by Lucius Flavius Arrianus, Alexander was trekking through the desert with his army, suffering along with them. A couple soldiers went ahead to find water. They brought back a trickle of water in a helmet, only enough for Alexander. Alexander took the water, and poured it all on the ground. The water wasted encouraged the whole army to keep on moving.
Alexander was great because he was successful at a young age. At the age of 20, Alexander became king of Macedonia. In just 11 years, Alexander grew his kingdom into an empire and unified the world. According to the Chart of Alexander’s Legacy1, his empire was 2,000,000 square miles. The Roman Empire at its greatest was 2,200,000 square miles. Alexander made his empire so successful that after he died, his empire existed for ten more years.
Alexander was great because he respected religions and cultures he conquered. According to historian Michael Wood, the Hindu-Kush thought of Alexander as great. Alexander respected their culture and portrayed himself as one of their gods. The Hindu-Kush language still has some similarities in words as the Greek language today.
Although Alexander did go into some wars and killed some people, he still did lots of good things. Alexander spread religions, influenced cultures, and unified the world. Alexander did not conquer countries, he took them over and respected their values. He wouldn’t do any extra harm for no reason. Alexander was GREAT!
