Great or Not Great? [Arka]

Was he so great? Alexander the Great, I mean, was Alexander really so great? I believe he is good most of the time and cares about his people.

“Alexander had ordered that all [except] those who sought sanctuary [safety in the temple] were to be slain…”1

He saved some of the people in the lands that he conquered, so he had some mercy. He could’ve just killed them all, but he saved some people! This shows he cares at least a little bit about the lives of other people!

Alexander respected other religions that he conquered. He spread Greek ideas. He went to Egyptian temples and respected Persian customs.

Not only did Alexander expand his land, he founded about seventy cities along the way! People could live in these cities and some of the cities are still here today.

He wasn’t just great to his people he was also great in battle. His army used a frightening formation, the Macedonian phalanx with extra-long spears. He conquered Greece, Persia, Egypt, and some of India! He would have kept going if his army didn’t get so tired. Alexander and his army were formidable foes to anyone who faced them and many times Alexander was at the front of the battle, leading the army.

He also tried to unify his entire empire by marrying Persian princesses and ordering his officers to marry Persian women. He wanted to do this so that there would be no more conflict within his empire.

Alexander was a great leader in almost every way and there couldn’t have been a better emperor!
